Should you post your staff numbers in the break room at the salon?


Today, I’m going to show you how to determine if you should.

A lot of salon owners will come up to me and ask,


“Hey Jason, I know I’m supposed to be posting the salon numbers in the break room because I heard it will help motivate them, but I’m worried it’s going to just bring them down. How do I do it?”


If it already feels that uncomfortable for you, it’s probably going to feel uncomfortable for them as well.


If you aren’t comfortable with it, please don’t just put the numbers up. You might create a walkout situation. I don’t want that to happen inside your salon. You need to figure out how your staff actually perceives those numbers.




I used to work for a company that talked about numbers in every meeting. It was publicly available. We would post the numbers in the back room. It would be a normal part of a one-on-one meeting. It was like this since I arrived, so I didn’t know any alternative.


Personally, I didn’t have a choice in the matter, so I had to adjust to the existing circumstances. However, if you have staff that has worked the same way for a long time, a major change in operations and transparency can lead people to freak out.




Here are some things you can do to start introducing numbers into your salon culture:


  1. Make sure that you’re using numbers in one-on-one meetings where you can share with them exactly what’s going on.
  2. If you have a separate management room, you could post numbers in that management room.
  3. Start by just posting one encouraging number in the back. For example, you could post the number of gift card salespeople are making, as a small first step.
  4. Post numbers for a short window of time. Temporarily make things transparent to ease the process of introducing numbers.




If you are just ready to rock and you think your team can handle it, I recommend sitting down with your key leaders inside your salon and say,


“What do you think would happen if we did this?”

“Here’s what I’m thinking….”

“How do you think we should do it?”


Then you can actually implement the resulting salon and spa business plan.
